St Arnaud Turf Club: The Club held its’ first ever race meeting where TAB facilities were provided along with the usual bookmakers on the ground.
Two horses fell during the first race but their jockeys were not hurt.
A horse ‘Bid Up’ travelling from Deniliquin was killed three miles from St Arnaud when the horse float came loose from the car pulling it.
‘Bid Up’ had won 27 of 33 starts in his career and was expected to do well at St Arnaud.
Four planeloads of people that arrived by air included 4 metropolitan jockeys, members of the V R C and racing and trotting sportscaster Ray Brown.
St Arnaud’s Feeny Bros won the Maiden Handicap with their three-year-old filly ‘Sporting Success’.
GL, WH and RN Knights won the Dalgety Stakes with their five-year-old gelding ‘Norfolk Blue’ and Kevin Meagher’s five-year-old horse ‘High Holborn’ was pipped at the post by a head in the Short Improvers event.
St Arnaud High School: Principal Mr J Chapman presented the school’s sports captains with their badges-Holmes – Frank Scarce and Kerry Meade, Morshead – Andrew Crone and Glenda Dyke, Nelson – Lindsay Ezard and Kaye McLean and Willmott – Mark Swanton and Patrica Organ.
St Arnaud Pony Club: President Keith McKay, Secretary Mrs V Baldwin, Treasurer Mrs L Robinson, District Commissioner Mrs G May, Chief Instructor Mrs M Cahan, fees $7-50 single family $13-50.
Special dressage competition – Grade 2 Megan Bromley 1st, Heather May 2nd, Grade 3 Beth Pyers 1st, Steven Postlethwaite 2nd, Kathy Teasdale 3rd, Grade 4 Leanne McKay 1st David Petrie 2nd and Elizabeth Crone 3rd.
